The Empty Chair Technique: Healing Conversations for Emotional Clarity

Imagine talking to an empty chair about a personal issue or workplace pressure. While it might seem odd, this approach is actually a recognized therapeutic technique.

Let’s go back to the 20th century, to the origin of this technique. The empty chair technique traces back to Jacob Levy Moreno, a psychiatrist who pioneered psychodrama in the early 20th century. He introduced creative and action-based therapy as an alternative to traditional psychoanalysis. Moreno's early work in chairwork laid the foundation for Gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, who incorporated and refined the empty chair method in Gestalt therapy, emphasizing awareness, self-reflection, and experiential emotional work.

What Is the Empty Chair Technique?

The Empty Chair Technique is a simple yet effective therapeutic technique that involves dialoguing with an empty chair, symbolizing a deceased or living person, an internal conflict, or a symbolic concept. This technique provides a structured yet experiential approach for clients to achieve emotional clarity, gain insight, release pent-up feelings, and foster self-awareness and healing through role-playing and emotional expression in a safe therapeutic setting. It is mainly used for managing grief, anxiety, guilt, internal conflicts, and rehearsing difficult conversations when direct interactions are not possible or safe.

At Koott, our Malayali psychologists integrate this technique as part of online counseling in Malayalam, helping clients process unresolved feelings related to grief, anxiety, guilt, or internal conflicts. This approach allows individuals to rehearse difficult conversations and find clarity when direct interactions aren’t possible or emotionally safe.

The technique is used to:

  • Express unresolved feelings toward absent or symbolic figures

  • Resolution of unfinished matters, such as grief or relational conflicts

  • Self-exploration of internal conflicts, such as self-criticism and self-compassion

  • Emotional release in a safe, controlled environment

  • Rehearsal and preparation for future real-life conversations or decisions

  • Changes in cognition by challenging negative thought patterns through role-play dialogue

Psychological Mechanisms Behind the Technique

  • Role-play-

A practice in which clients adopt different roles, allowing them to explore and gain various perspectives and better understand their experiences.

  • Emotional expression-

Don’t you feel like sometimes your head is about to explode with thoughts or feelings? Emotional expressions or the release of pent-up, hidden feelings and thoughts can enable clients to act on those difficult emotions, leading to greater emotional clarity and healing.

  • Cognitive restructuring-

Similar to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, in the Empty chair technique, the dialogue between the self and the imagined other helps the clients to identify, challenge, and reframe negative thoughts, leading to cognitive shifts and new ways of thinking

Studies reveal that the Empty Chair Technique aids in reducing anxiety, depression, and self-criticism, while enhancing emotional expression and self-compassion. At Koott, our experienced Malayali psychologists often use this method as part of online counseling in Malayalam, helping clients improve emotional well-being and cope with grief — including experiences of bereavement and loss during times like COVID-19.

How Does the Empty Chair Technique Work?

The process may sound simple, but it is deeply powerful when facilitated by a trained therapist.

Steps involved:

  1. Setting- The first step is to set a private, distraction-free space, usually with two chairs facing each other. The therapist ensures the client is emotionally ready.

  1. Explanation: The therapist helps the client understand the purpose, process, and goals of the technique, setting clear expectations and obtaining informed consent. Unless the technique is clearly explained, the technique wouldn’t work out to the client’s benefit.

  2. Choice of Focus- The client selects who or what the empty chair represents, maybe an absent person, part of the self, or a symbolic entity.

  1. Dialogue- The client speaks to the empty chair. They speak as honestly as possible, similar to how they would communicate with another person(imagined self). They express thoughts, feelings, and unresolved issues.

  1. Role Reversal- Role reversals also take place. The client may switch chairs and respond from the imagined other’s perspective, fostering empathy, healing, and new understanding.

  2. Reflection- Reflection is the last step where the client reviews all the emotions experienced during the session and insights gained, often with therapist guidance on emotional grounding or further exploration.

What are some considerations to be taken before administering the Empty Chair Technique?

  • This technique may lead to emotional flooding. Clients should be emotionally stable enough for potentially intense emotional expression.

  • The presence of trained therapists is crucial, who can provide support and grounding during distress.

  • Clients should be prepared for strong emotional reactions such as grief, anger, or sadness.

  • This technique may not be appropriate for individuals with severe trauma or psychosis without specialized care.

  • The therapist should create a psychologically safe atmosphere by creating a distraction-free setup.

  • The therapist must proceed with sensitivity to the client’s readiness and limits. Be patient and aware.

  • Informed consent and a clear explanation of the process are essential to set realistic expectations.

Paivio and Greenberg (1995) conducted a randomized controlled trial demonstrating that experiential therapy using the Empty Chair Technique led to significant emotional healing for clients with unresolved feelings toward loved ones. Those who underwent this technique showed greater improvement in symptoms, interpersonal distress, and emotional resolution, with lasting benefits even after one year.
